A foot soldier in the North Carolina Infantry, Aristarchus Jenkins survived some of the most horrific battles of the Civil War after being shot in the head and shoulder. Starving, he left the battlefield to return home, only to be shunned by his family as a deserter. He was admitted to the Dix Asylum suffering from "mania," he lived there until his death in 1891
